GENEVA, N.Y.-Hobart and William Smith Colleges announced today
that Matt Kerwick, a 1990 graduate of Hobart College and the head
coach of the Hobart lacrosse team, has stepped down from his
position.
Citing his desire to do what is best for his family, Kerwick leaves
the Statesmen after seven years of service to his alma mater.
"I'd like to thank President Mark Gearan and Hobart College for
allowing my family and me to be a part of the Hobart lacrosse
tradition," says Kerwick. "It's been a privilege to work with so
many great Hobart student-athletes in my seven years in Geneva. I'm
extremely proud of the young men who have put on the Statesmen
jersey each day and all of their accomplishments. Most importantly,
I'm grateful for the friendships I have made that will last a
lifetime."
"Matt has done an admirable job in guiding our student-athletes
through Division I play," says Interim Vice President of Student
Affairs Robb Flowers, who oversees the Hobart and William Smith
athletic departments. "On behalf of all of the students he has
coached, his colleagues and our alumni, I thank Matt for his
service to the Colleges."
"In seven seasons as head coach, Matt has demonstrated the kind of
teamwork and sportsmanship that all Hobart students and alumni
should emulate," says Dean of Hobart College Eugen Baer. "We will
miss his presence on and off the field and wish him the best for
the future."
Hobart lacrosse was 46-53 during Kerwick's tenure. He led the team
to their 24th and 25th NCAA Tournament appearances and a second
conference championship. During the 2008 season, the Statesmen
posted an 8-6 record, including a 4-3 mark in the ECAC Lacrosse
League. Hobart finished the regular season 15th in the nation in
scoring defense (7.7 gpg), a Statesmen Division I season-record.
Under Kerwick's leadership, Hobart's offense achieved a top 25 NCAA
ranking in each of the past six seasons, finishing 14th in the
country this season (10.5 gpg). Hobart finished the year with 147
goals and allowed 109. Kerwick shared the 2008 ECAC Coach of the
Year award with Loyola Head Coach Charlie Toomey.
While a member of the Patriot League, the Statesmen made NCAA
Tournament appearances in 2002 and 2004, winning the conference
championship in the former season. In recognition of his efforts,
Kerwick was named the 2002 Patriot League Coach of the Year.
In addition to his duties on campus, Kerwick was an assistant coach
for the U.S. National Team at the 2006 International Lacrosse
Federation World Championship, where the Americans brought home the
silver medal.
Kerwick returned to his alma mater following three seasons as an
assistant coach at Georgetown University. He previously spent three
seasons as the head coach at both Alfred University and
Randolph-Macon College and was an assistant coach at the University
of Pennsylvania for one season. Kerwick's overall coaching record
stands at 98-84.
As a player for the Statesmen, Kerwick was a member of four
Division III National Championship teams, was a two-time USILA
All-American, and earned the 1989 NCAA Tournament MVP Award. He was
also a four-year letterwinner on the Hobart hockey team, serving as
a captain for both squads during his senior year.
