Fairfield Falls To #3 Maryland In Non-Conference Finale

The Fairfield University men’s lacrosse team dropped a 17-4 decision to third-ranked Maryland on Saturday afternoon. The loss drops the Stags to 8-5 on the year, while the Terps improve to 10-3.
Brent Adams tallied two goals while Max Trunz had a pair of assist to lead the Stags offense. Sean Bannon and Nick Tandoi provided the Stags other two goals for the afternoon.
Fairfield continued to play well in man-down situations, killing off 2-3 penalties on the day, while not scoring on its only man-up chance of the afternoon.
Maryland ran out to an 8-0 lead, including a six-goal first quarter. Adams broke the Stags scoring drought with 6:57 to play in the first-half, putting home a pass from Trunz. The Terps netted the final two goals of the half, including a score from Brian Farrell goal with 16 seconds to play. Maryland tallied the only four goals of the third quarter to take a 15-1 lead with 51 seconds to play in the period.
Tandoi snapped the Stags scoreless stretch 3:10 into the fourth quarter. It would take the Stags just 10 seconds to get their next goal, as Steve Golmont won the ensuing face-off. Adams scooped up the ground ball and it eventually ended up in the stick of Bannon, who deposited it in the back of the net. The Stags mini-run stretched to three straight goals when Adams put home a pass from Matt Rubertone with 8:42 to play, to make the score 15-4. Maryland tallied the final two goals of the game to provide the final margin. Golmont finished 9-22 in face-offs on the afternoon.
Joe Marra took the loss in net for the Stags, making 11 saves, while allowing 10 goals. Charlie Cipriano played the final 30 minutes in net, making seven saves, while giving up seven goals. Brian Phipps earned the win for the Terps, making seven saves in his 44:09, allowing only one goal. Mark White minded the net for the final 15:51 and stopped two shots while allowing three goals.
Maryland outshot the Stags 51-23 for the game and held a 39-24 advantage in ground balls. The Terps won 15-24 face-offs, while clearing 20-20. The Stags cleared 13-20 on the afternoon.
Fairfield will wrap up the regular season at ECAC Lacrosse League foe Quinnipiac on Saturday, May 8. The game, being played on the Quinnipiac Field Hockey & Lacrosse Turf Field, is set for 1 p.m.
