ECAC Men's Lacrosse League Announces Weekly Awards for Feb. 21

CAPE COD, Mass. (Feb. 21, 2011) – The Eastern College Athletic Conference Monday announced the weekly honorees for the period ending Sunday.

Co-Offensive Players of the Week
Ohio State’s Jarred Bowman, a senior midfielder out of Cincinnati, Ohio (Archbishop Moeller High School), had two goals and an assist for three points in the Buckeyes’ upset win over third-ranked North Carolina, 13-8. The team captain scored the Buckeyes’ first goal to cut an early UNC lead to 2-1. Bowman’s second goal again drew the Buckeyes within one (5-4) at 10:01 of the second quarter. His two goals, three points and three shots all were career highs, to go along with a ground ball.

Loyola sophomore attackman Mike Sawyer (Waxhaw, N.C./Charlotte Catholic HS) – who missed the entire 2010 campaign – scored three goals on just five shots on goal Saturday, as the nationally ranked Greyhounds climbed back from a five-goal deficit to beat Navy, 9-8. Sawyer put Loyola on the board with a man-up goal in the second quarter, ripped a 15-yard shot to start the team’s rally in the third and then gave the Greyhounds their first lead of the game at 8-7 with 11:33 left in the contest, scoring his second-straight unassisted goal. He also was key in Loyola’s possession game, a major factor in the comeback. He scooped up four ground balls, leading all Greyhound offensive players, as Loyola controlled 21 second-half ground balls to Navy’s three.

Defensive Player of the Week
Goalie Evan Kirk (Orangeville, Ontario/Salisbury School) led Hobart to a come-from-behind 9-8 victory over Robert Morris by making 12 saves in his first collegiate start. The senior limited the Colonials, who led the nation last season with 15.33 goals per game, to just eight goals on Saturday. Under pressure from the opening whistle, he turned aside five shots in the first quarter to keep the Statesmen in the game, down only 3-2. Hobart trailed 8-4 during the fourth quarter before scoring the last five goals of the game.

Rookie of the Week
Freshman goalkeeper Greg Dutton, of Timonium, Md./Calvert Hall College, played a role in Ohio State’s 13-8 upset victory Saturday over No. 3 North Carolina. In just the second start of his collegiate career, Dutton made eight saves. He also led the transition game, with OSU 18-for-20 on clears for a 90.0 percent success rate versus one of the best riding teams in the sport. He made a series of big saves in the second half, as well as sparking the transition with some of his long outlets. He also had two groundballs.
