CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The University of Michigan wrapped its inaugural varsity season Saturday, falling to No. 5 North Carolina, 19-5, at Fetzer Field. Michigan was tied with the Tar Heels, 2-2, at the 8:49 mark of the first quarter, but the Tar Heels went on a 7-1 run to close the half and outscored the Wolverines, 10-2, in the second half.  Boxscore

Michigan will be a full-fledged member of the Eastern College Athletic Conference next season, and will be eligible for the ECAC Championship Tournament.

North Carolina got off to a 2-0 lead less than five minutes into the contest on scores by Marcus Holman and Pat Foster, but senior Brian Greiner (Grosse Point Farms, Mich./Grosse Point South) cut the lead in half with his fourth score of the season after a faceoff violation by the Tar Heels.

Junior Zachary Dauch (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Lahser) knotted the contest at the 8:49 mark, beating North Carolina goalkeeper Steven Rastivo high-to-low with his third goal of the season. Following Dauch's tally, UNC then tallied consecutive scores to take a 4-2 advantage before fifth-year senior Trevor Yealy (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) notched his 24th goal of the year after he beat his defender with a face dodge and cut the lead to 4-3 before heading into the intermission trailing 6-3 after the first frame of action.

After being held scoreless in the second quarter, the Wolverines entered the second half trailing 9-3. Yealy added his second goal of the night at the 11:30 mark on a curl from the right side of the cage to cut the Tar Heels lead to 11-4. However, UNC outscored the Wolverines 7-1 in the third to carry a 16-4 advantage into the final quarter of action.

Michigan's final tally came with 4:51 left in the contest as freshman Andrew Mosko (Bethesda, Md./Georgetown Prep) scored on junior Willie Steenland's (Minneapolis, Minn./The Blake School) 13th helper of the season to bring the score to 18-5.

Freshman goaltender Emil Weiss (Cary, N.C./Apex) started the game in goal for U-M and made 15 saves in the first half before giving way to sophomore Dylan Westerhold (Madison, N.J./The Pingry School), who made one save while allowing four scores in 3:54 of action to start the third period. Weiss reassumed his goalkeeping duties at the 11:06 mark of the third quarter and made a game-high 15 saves in cage.

Michigan was outshot 53-20 in the contest, scored on five of its 20 opportunities, and was 15-of-19 on clears.

• Faceoff specialist Brian Greiner scored four goals in the final four games of his collegiate career.

• Freshman longstick Mack Gembis tied a career high with three groundballs.

• Trevor Yealy's pair of goals marks the ninth time this season he has had a multi-goal effort.

• The Wolverines' five goals tied their lowest output of the season. U-M also scored five against Denver (Feb. 25).
