Hobart Announces 2009 Lacrosse Captains
First-year Hobart College Lacrosse Head Coach T.W. Johnson recently announced team captains for the 2009 season. Seniors Jeff Colburn (CNS/Liverpool, N.Y.), Ricky Evans (Immaculate Heart/Watertown, N.Y.), Justin Hager (Salamanca/Salamanca, N.Y.), Sam Orr (Avon Old Farms/Simsbury, Conn.), and Matt Smalley (Avon Old Farms/Cumberland, R.I.) will lead the Statesmen through their 107th varsity season.

ECAC Announces 2009 Preseason All-ECAC Team
In a vote by the league coaches, Penn State players won two of the three major preseason awards, and Georgetown and Rutgers each had three players named to the team. Penn State goalkeeper Drew Adams was named the preseason Defensive Player of the Year, while freshman attack/midfielder Matthew Mackrides was tabbed as the preseason Rookie of the Year. Rutgers will be led by midfielder Justin Pennington, who was named the preseason Offensive Player of the Year.

Fairfield's Matt Scanlon Taken By Denver In First Round Of MLL Supplemental Draft
Matt Scanlon (Bel Air, Md.), a 2008 graduate of Fairfield University and four-year letterwinner on the men's lacrosse team, was the eighth pick in the Major League Lacrosse (MLL) supplemental draft. Scanlon was drafted by the Denver Outlaws with the ninth overall pick; however Chicago, which had the first selection, forfeited its first round pick.

Georgetown Tabbed as 2009 Preseason ECAC Lacrosse League Favorite
In a vote by league coaches, the Georgetown Hoyas have been chosen as the favorites to capture the 2009 ECAC Lacrosse League title. The Hoyas have been picked first by league coaches for ten straight years and have won the title six times. The Hoyas tallied 47 possible points including five first place votes. Loyola, the defending ECAC Lacrosse League champion, garnered 43 points and the remaining three first place votes and was tabbed to finish second.

Baltimore, Md. - Loyola College Head Men's Lacrosse Coach Charley Toomey announced today that the team has selected its captains for the 2009 season. The 2009 Greyhounds will be led by fifth year seniors Shane Koppens and Eddie Graham, as well as seniors PT Ricci and Jimmy Daly. This group looks to lead the Greyhounds to their second straight ECAC Championship and third consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance.

Nick Schmidt Added to Rutgers Coaching Staff
After a stellar playing career at Rutgers, Nick Schmidt returns to ‘the Banks’ as a volunteer assistant coach on the Scarlet Knights staff in 2009. Schmidt, who played for Rutgers from 2000-03, was a part of the incredible turnaround of RU lacrosse. During his senior campaign the Scarlet Knights went 10-5 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 12 years.

Minutemen To Participate In "Friends Of Jaclyn" 5K Run/Walk
At 11:00AM, on Sunday, Sept. 21, athletes from the men's and women's lacrosse team, as well as the field hockey team, will be running a 5K at Amherst College to raise awareness for pediatric brain cancer. Former field hockey player Erin O'Brien created this race to merge the community with the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation. The Minutemen/Minutewomen will be joined by student-athletes from UConn, Mt. Holyoke College, and Amherst College to celebrate and support the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation, an organization dedicated to creating awareness for children with brain tumors.

Boston Blazers Draft UMass Alum Paul Manesis
UMass lacrosse alum Paul Manesis ('08) was selected by the Boston Blazers in the National Lacrosse League Entry Draft on Friday, Sept. 12. The defensive midfielder, who was picked in the fifth round (56th overall), will reunite with former Minutemen standouts Sean Morris ('06) and Jack Reid ('06) in Boston's inaugural season at the TD Banknorth Garden. The Blazers mark the second professional Boston team to select Manesis, the other being Major League Lacrosse's Cannons who drafted him in the third round (26th overall) in May.

UMass Alums Reid, Zywicki Win MLL Championship
Behind a game-high six goal effort from Jeff Zywicki ('05) and steady defense from Jack Reid ('06), the Rochester Rattlers defeated the Denver Outlaws, 16-6, in the NB Zip MLL Championship Game on Sunday afternoon at Harvard Stadium. Zywicki was the offensive star with six points (all goals), scoring as many points as the entire Denver team. He also added three groundball pickups while Reid finished with one groundball. Reid was part of a defensive core which held a high-powered Denver attack to only six points, nine less than their regular season average of 15. It marked the first MLL Title for both Reid and Zywicki and for Reid it was second professional lacrosse title in the last two years; he won the 2007 NLL (indoor lacrosse) championship with the Rochester Knighthawks.

Coach Ted Spencer has decided to retire after serving 13 seasons as Fairfield University's head men's lacrosse coach, and has accepted an administrative position as Associate Director of Athletics at the school. The change will allow Spencer to remain at the University while he continues to regain his health from his battle with cancer.

UMass alum Kevin Leveille ('03) got the better of former Minuteman teammate Chris Fiore ('03) as Leveille's Western Conference squad defeated Fiore's East squad, 31-15, in the Major League Lacrosse All-Star Game at Invesco Field at Mile High. Leveille got the West off to the quick lead, assisting on the game's first goal and scoring the second to give the jumpstart all the way to the team's All-Star game record 31 points. In total, he finished tied for the most points in the game with seven on three goals and four assists.

Rutgers men's lacrosse rising sophomore Brian Shemesh (Hillsborough, N.J.) and the United States Under-19 men's lacrosse team captured gold at the 2008 International Lacrosse Federation (ILF) World Championships. Team USA defeated Canada 19-12 in the championship game before an estimated 3,400 fans at Percy Perry Stadium.

Former Georgetown Lax Player Andrew Baird Raising Money for Uncle in 'Race for Dad'
Former Georgetown University men's lacrosse player Andrew Baird wanted to find a way to keep busy at the end of his senior year. He had some job interviews lined up, and he knew his parents would have more than enough yard work for him to do, but along the way, he found something that began to occupy more of his time. For the last five years, Baird, his parents and his brothers and sisters have joined other family members in New Jersey on Father's Day. There, the contingent takes part in the Run for Dad, a Tribute to Frank Simms, Baird's uncle.

The NCAA Divisions I, II and III Men's Lacrosse Championships took place this weekend at Gillette Stadium with the ECAC and Harvard along with the Kraft family and staff serving as hosts. The event set new NCAA outdoor championships and men's lacrosse records for attendance as the weekend drew a total of 145,828 fans.

UMass had three players selected in the 2008 Major League Lacrosse College Draft on Wednesday night in Hoboken, N.J. Midfielder Paul Manesis was taken in the third round (No. 26) by the Boston Cannons. Defenseman Sean Krygier was taken in the fourth round (No. 36) by the San Francisco Dragons. UMass junior attacker Tim Balise was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Men's At-Large First-Team. Balise is now eligible to become an Academic All-American. Balise was the lone member of the team with a perfect 4.0 GPA. He also led UMass in scoring as well as the team and ECAC in goals in 2008.

T.W. Johnson Named New Head Coach at Hobart
Hobart and William Smith Colleges announced today that Thomas W. "T.W." Johnson Jr., who has served as assistant coach of the Hobart lacrosse team for four seasons, has been promoted to head coach. Johnson's appointment follows Matt Kerwick's '90 announcement that he is stepping down as head coach.

Three UMass Lacrosse Players Named All-New England
Three UMass men's lacrosse players were named to the NEILA All-New England second team for 2008. Junior attackman Tim Balise, senior long-stick midfielder Brian Danvers and junior goalie Doc Schneider were all named to the second team. Danvers and Schneider were both named to the first team last year in 2007.

Duke Eliminates Loyola From NCAA Tournament
Playing in their second straight NCAA Tournament, Loyola's men's lacrosse team challenged top-seeded Duke in first-round play on Saturday afternoon in Durham, N.C. The Blue Devils, however, proved worthy of their No. 1 ranking and played like a veteran team en route to a 12-7 win over the Greyhounds.

ECAC Lacrosse League Awards Announced; Loyola Takes Three of Five Major Awards
In a vote by the league coaches, three Loyola Greyhounds were honored with postseason ECAC awards. Senior Shane Koppens has been named the 2008 ECAC Offensive Player of the Year, while freshman Jake Hagelin has been tabbed the ECAC Co-Rookie of the Year. The performance of those two student-athletes throughout the season helped lead Loyola to the ECAC Lacrosse League title and helped Coach Charley Toomey earn ECAC Co-Coach of the Year honors.

After a week of reaction to the April 26 decision by the Board of Trustees to move Hobart lacrosse from Division I to Division III, last night the Board gathered via phone to assess the situation. In a landmark decision, the Board determined that Hobart should remain in Division I lacrosse.

Hobart to Reclassify Lacrosse to Division III
The Hobart and William Smith Colleges Board of Trustees voted today to reclassify Hobart lacrosse from Division I to Division III. Citing the changing landscape of collegiate lacrosse and the challenges inherent in recruiting talented student-athletes at the Division I level without athletic scholarships, the Board voted to move to Division III starting with the 2008-09 academic year.

Loyola Clinches Share of ECAC Title and NCAA Bid With 13-4 Win at Fairfield
Collin Finnerty scored twice in the opening two minutes of play and Loyola never looked back en route to a 13-4 win at Fairfield on Saturday afternoon. The win clinched at least a share of the ECAC conference title for Loyola. Since the Greyhounds own the tiebreaker over Georgetown they have also clinched the ECAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Loyola (6-0) can win the ECAC title outright next weekend with a victory at Hobart, while the Hoyas (5-1) must root for the Statesmen and defeat Rutgers in order to earn a piece of the ECAC title.

Late Flurry Sparks Penn State to 8-7 Win Over No. 9 Bucknell for Glenn Thiel’s 300th Win
The Penn State lacrosse team used a late-game flurry to stun No. 9 Bucknell, 8-7, under the lights at Jeffrey Field in State College. Junior goalie Drew Adams sparked Penn State with his first career goal and made 14 saves. Chris Mulqueen scored the game-winning goal with 1:34 to play to lift Penn State to the victory. The win was the 300th career head coaching victory for Nittany Lion mentor Glenn Thiel. Thiel is now 300-203 in his 41st year as a head coach. He is 223-167 in his 31st year at Penn State.

Loyola Takes Control Of ECAC With 11-9 Win Over No. 4 Georgetown
Senior Shane Koppens had a career day with five goals and two assists as Loyola defeated No. 4 Georgetown at Diane Geppi-Aikens Field on Saturday afternoon. The Greyhounds never trailed en route to an 11-9 win, and in the process take control of the ECAC with a 5-0 conference record this season.

Staying in the Game: Georgetown Senior Matt McBride Still Part of Hoya Men’s Lax Team After Concussions Sideline Playing Career
In many ways, he is a walking ambassador for the Georgetown men’s lacrosse program these days. He helps out at practice, the coaches lean on him to help out on a day-to-day basis, upperclassmen pick his brain for suggestions and underclassmen look to him for guidance. And when young kids come to practice or games, Matt McBride is there to greet them with a smile. Off the field, McBride is among the many student-athletes who visits young children at the Georgetown University Hospital to lift up their spirits. He will graduate in May as a pre-med major and has a job waiting for him at Goldman Sachs in New York City.

No. 10 Georgetown Upsets Top-Ranked Duke, 11-7
The tenth-ranked Georgetown University men's lacrosse team outscored top-ranked and previously unbeaten Duke, 8-2 after halftime and senior goalkeeper Miles Kass posted 18 saves, one shy of his career high as the Hoyas upset the Blue Devils in front of 2,412 fans on the Multi-Sport Field on Saturday afternoon. Georgetown improves to 4-2 overall while Duke falls to 8-1.

Commissioner of the ECAC Rudy Keeling announced today that the conference has formed a media partnership with CN8, The Comcast Network, to broadcast six live ECAC Lacrosse League games this spring. The package will debuts on Saturday, March 22 at 2:00 p.m. with Loyola at UMass.

Seven ECAC Lacrosse League players have been named to the "watch list" for the 2008 Tewaaraton Trophy sponsored by Warrior. The players on the list were nominated by coaches from all three divisons and are early season hopefuls for the prestigious award presented to the top lacrosse player in the nation. The watch list of 51 players includes: Brendan Cannon and Jerry Lambe of Georgetown, Chris O'Dougherty of Rutgers, Daryl Veltman of Hobart, Drew Adams of Penn State, and Paul Richards and Shane Koppens of Loyola.
